Similar protests were held peacefully in other cities of Malawi where people say they are reeling from combined effects of a rising cost of living, prolonged electricity blackouts and high levels of corruption in the government.
The protests were organised by represtatives of civic and human rights organisations.
They gave Mutharika an ulrimatum to act within 90 days or face more nation-wide demonstrations.
