SEVENTEEN demonstrators who reportedly tore down billboards bearing portraits and messages of President Peter Mutharika are expected to appear in Court in Mzuzu tomorrow.
The 17 were in the large crowd of of people who demonstrated against the policies of Mutharika and his Democratic Progressive Party, DPP last Friday
Similar protests were held peacefully in other cities of Malawi where people say they are reeling from combined effects of a rising cost of living, prolonged electricity blackouts and high levels of corruption in the government.
The protests were organised by represtatives of civic and human rights organisations.
They gave Mutharika an ulrimatum to act within 90 days or face more nation-wide demonstrations.
The 17 were being remanded at Mzuzu prison, according to the police
