POLICE in Mchinji have arrested a 54-year-old Congolese National, Abdullah Sebambe, after being found in possession of eight pieces of ivory weighing about 23.6 kilograms.
Police arrested Sebambe who operates an agri-business at Mkanda Trading Centre in the same district after receiving a tip on from members of the community Wednesday.
He has been searching for potential buyers.
“Police promptly followed up the tip and went to Mkanda Trading Centre where officers posed as potential buyers,” Mchinji police spokesperson Kaitano Lubrino told The Express.
The ivory is yet to be sent to the department of Malawi National Parks and wild life for scientific analysis.
The suspect comes from North Kivu Province in Democratic Republic of Congo.
He will appear before court to answer charges of being found in possession of specimen of protected species contrary to section 86 (1) and dealing in Government trophies contrary to section 91(1) of Parks and Wildlife Act of 2017.
