MALAWI Congress Party, MCP , has stressed that it will take over government from the Democratic Progressive Party, DPP, next year.
MCP president, Dr Lazarus Chakwera disclosed this in his closing remarks at the party convention yesterday.
Dr Chakwera emphasized that MCP is the only hope for Malawi and it is ready to develop the country.
According to the MCP president, the current leadership has failed Malawians for failing to end corruption and nepotism among others.
On claims that the convention was illegal by the party’s former Secretary General Gustav Kaliwo, Chakwera said the indaba was legall arranged as the court had given them a go ahead.
In his remarks, newly elected MCP first vice president Sidik Mia asked Malawians to trust in the party next year saying it is ready to improve lives of all Malawians especially those living in rural areas.
However, there were disagreements among the delegates following decision by some contestants from the central region to pave way for selected candidates from other regions since the center had consumed more seats.
Meanwhile, the chairing committee has resolved to give the responsibility of choosing the remaining torch bearers to the party’s president and regional chairpersons.
So far, the party’s convention has elected Lazarus Chakwera as the president, Sidik Mia is the first vice president while Harry Mkandawire is the second vice president.
Eisenhower Mkaka is the new party Secretary General and Reverend Maurice Munthali is the new Publicity Secretary for the party.
Richard Chimwendo Banda has been elected as the Director of Youth, Cornelius Mwalwanda is the Director of Economic Affairs and Maureen Bondo is the new Director of Social Services while Patricia Nkanda is the Director of Women.
Delegates at the convention have so far told The Express that they are satisfied with the elections and they are ready to support the current NEC members.
