COURT in Chikwawa on Thursday sentenced a 22-year old man to 12 years imprisonment for defiling a five-year-old girl.
Chikwawa Police Public Relations Officer, Constable Foster Benjamin, confided to The Express that the incident happened in the evening of April 5 this year in Chambuluka village in the district.
The mother of the victim had gone to look for her husband at a nearby market leaving the child behind.
Joseph Moses, who is a neighbor to the girl, then dragged the victim from the mat outside her house into his bedroom and defiled her.
On her return, the mother got wind of the suspect’s act, and confronted him on the matter.
The convict tried to escape but was apprehended by members of the community who handed him to police.
The victim was referred to Chikwawa District Hospital where a medical examination showed that she had really been sexually abused.
In his trial, Moses denied the charge but the state unleashed three witnesses against him.
