The Flames

THE FLAMES ignite their 2018 COSAFA Cup campaign with a group B match against Mauritius this evening in South Africa.

Coach Ronny van Geneugden, who already has his eyes set on the final, is of the strong opinion that a win is extremely important towards achieving that ambition.

The Belgian national spoke to Football Association of Malawi on Facebook yesterday.

He stressed that Malawi are ready tactically, physically and also mentally.

RVG went on to say that everyone is looking forward to the tournament as his charges seek to start with a good result against in the their opening game.

This evening’s match will kick off from 7:30 at Mokaba stadium.

Malawi, who will be playing as visitors, go into the match as very strong favourites.

A head-to-head record of the two nations sourced on shows that Malawi and Mauritius have met 20 times since 1970.

The Flames have burned Les Dodos eleven times with five draws. The last time the sides played against each was ironically in last year’s COSAFA Cup.

Malawi are on position 119 while their opponents of the day dropped two positions to 161 in recent FIFA rankings released on 17 May.

They are two time consecutive runners of the continental cup and won its plate edition in 2015.
