Cases of theft on the rise in Mwanza: Kaunda

MWANZA First Grade Magistrate yesterday sentenced a-23-year-old man to five years in jail for robbery.

Police Publicist for Mwanza, Edwin Kaunda, disclosed to The Express that on 4th April this year, the man, Manuel Zee, robbed a motorcycle valued at K400, 00 from Joseph Disimasi.

Disimasi reported the theft to the police which prompted them to launch an investigation.

He was arrested and appeared to court on 6th April where he pleaded not guilty to the charge leveled against him.

The ruling prompted police through prosecutor Joshua Chirambo, to parade three witnesses who all testified against Zee and the court found the convict guilty with an offence of robbery.

In his submission, Chirambo asked the court to slap Zee with a stiffer sentence considering the seriousness of the charge.

Presiding Magistrate, His Worship Ranwell Mangazi concurred with the police officer and sentenced the offender to five years imprisonment.

Cases of motorcycles theft are common in Mwanza and neighboring Neno where motorcycle business (Kabaza) is booming due to exodus of the motorcycles from Mozambique.

Manuel Zee hails from Mkwete Village Traditional Authority Nthache in the district.
