Mount Mulanje Porters’ race is regarded as one of Malawi's most challenging extreme sporting

Malawian owned mobile phone network and ISP, TNM will officially sponsor the 22nd Mount Mulanje Porters’ race set for 14 July in Mulanje district.

This will be TNM’s second successive sponsorship of the annual tournament which covers a distance of 22 kilometers.

The official sponsors are extending their invitation to business executives to participate in a 6 kilometers uphill race on the sidelines of the main event.

The captains of industry will have to pay K5000 to walk or run in the uphill race.

Athletes in the main race will run from the valley of Likhubula to Chambe plateau and Lichenya plateau before getting back to Likhubula.

They will compete in the categories of ladies and porters, non-porters and internationals.

Competitors in the ladies and porters category will have to pay a participation fee of K500. Non-porters’ registration fee is at K1000 while international participants are required to pay K10, 000 to register.

Other activities on the day will include a live gig dubbed “Island in the sky concert” which was headed by gospel sensation Faith Mussa during the 21st Mount Mulanje Porters’ race.

Veteran athlete, Charles Musowa goes into this year’s edition as the defending champion while Doris Fisher will seek to retain the title in the ladies category.

Established in 1996, the Mount Mulanje Porters’ race is hosted by Mulanje Mountain Conservation Trust.
