Kachasu is a locally brewed beer.

A 26-year-old Mozambican man died on Friday after drinking a traditionally brewed spirit called ‘Kachasu’ in Malawi’s central region district of Mchinji.

A police spokesperson in the district says Pilirani Levison cycled from his native nation to Chimombo village in the area of traditional Authority Mlonyeni in Mchinji for a drink in the company of his friend on June 22.

Kayitano Lubrino explains that they two went on drinking till midnight without taking any food.

He says on that fateful night the two men agreed to go back home in Mozambique.

The police spokesperson further reports that they failed to safely cycle back home due to heavy intoxication.

Instead the Mozambicans slept along Mtukwa – Mozambique Earth Road within Gulawe Village located in Mchinji.

The following morning community members found the two young men sleeping.

This a prompted the natives to wake up the strangers only to be shocked that Levison had died.

A postmortem conducted by medics from Mchinji District Hospital established that he died due to hypoglycemia as secondary to excessive ‘Kachasu’ drinking on empty berry.

Meanwhile, the Malawi Police Service through Mchinji Police Station is appealing to the general public to drink alcohol responsibly to avoid the re-occurrence of similar incidents.
